This year, I have 2 new members joining my family.

Well, some people wonder why I get a tablet. Let me tell ya a story =)

Short story 1

Once upon a time, there was a little boy. During his free time, he would always draw something. Whether or not having a paper or art block, he would always managed to find ways to create his masterpiece on the tables, floors and walls. When he had his hands on color pencils or oil crayons, things will definitely go out of control.

The consequences was, when his mum came home, the poor little boy was scolded because he scribbled on the tables, floors and walls. As the punishment, his mum kept all the stationery away, and he could no longer find them. And so the little boy's interest was diverted to something else.

More than 10 years later, the little boy is no longer a little child. He's now a grown up, a young adult. One fine day, he suddenly realize his long lost interest. With less constraint now, he plans to take up drawing. And hopefully in the future, he can become a successful artist.

(now put me into that little boy's position xD )

Long time ago, there was this tortoise ♥. It was so cute. And the little boy came into the pet store. He looked at the fishes, but this little tortoise ♥ caught his attention. The little tortoise ♥ stared back with its cute round eyes. He was taunted by the tortoise ♥. And so till today, he likes tortoise ♥ so much until he has a tortoise ♥ with him everytime.

Woo~ first time saw a protest in Melbourne! Today our holidays "officially" begins. So we went city walk around. And I saw this...

WOOLIES = WOOLWORTHS

Woolworths is a chain store selling fresh food.

(Perhaps they pay too little for their fresh produce), these farmers and workers decide to go on a street demonstration.

The situation was damn cool. Police patrols just drove beside them, but did not take any action (not like Malaysia where small small peaceful demonstration also catch already)

Woolies are Bullies!

Let's shop at Coles instead. The food from Coles is also fresher.

Last time I bought a chicken from Woolworths and it became smelly even before expiry date.

Well, taking a portrait picture is easy. However, drawing a portrait is a different story. In the end, I got an unfinished picture and some dirty fingers. Guess I should just stick to studying for exams at the moment :(

What is photography.

Someone did ask me before. Why do I like photography? The answer is simple.

The only difference with a gun and a camera is...the gun has a trigger, while the camera has a shutter.

How does a gun work? Easy. Plug in the bullets, aim, and shoot.

How does a camera work? Simple too. Insert battery and memory card, aim and shoot.

The similarities are there. Both simply just need to take aim, and shoot :)

A gun.

Then,

What are the differences?

Well, we all know what a gun and a camera can do.

Lets not go into the details first.

A gun, you must have a valid license to own it.

A camera, anyone with the ability to use it can own it.

A gun hurts the target.

While a camera captures the beautiful moment of the subject.

In a war, guns are used to wipe out the memories of a living.

In a war, cameras are used to capture the untold stories.

The Australia War Memorial. Why do we need war?

Now to the details.

A bullet ends life.

A great photo gives life to a person.

A bullet gives anger, sorrow, hate, revenge.

A photo captures the joy, the smile, the moments together, as well as the anger, sorrow and hate.

There's no turning back for a bullet fired.

A bad photo can always be edited, or deleted.

The names of deceased soldier during the war.

So, what can be concluded?

Memories of good times.

The bird will not be alive anymore if its shot with a gun.

The bird is still alive, and this photo shows us that the bird is beautiful!

Finally,

I like to hold my breath, look deep into the subject's eyes, and press the shutter.

Searching for a toilet.

Due to unforeseen circumstances, my stairway does not have water today, and perhaps tomorrow. So they shut off the toilets as well.

I wanna go to the toilet~

So I went to the toilet,

Climbed a flight of stairs,

I opened the outer door,

A guy came out from the toilet~

He was smiling at me~

I wonder why,

I pushed the toilet door,

OMG it's so smelly,

So I went to the toilet,

With no lights.

Sorry people for the late post.

Yeah this is Melbourne. As you can see the city is modern, with many cool buildings around. The city is not really big, but there are lots of things to look around.

Well, yeah there's lots of bars around there for people to hang around after work, perhaps to eat, relax, drink some beer, cheer around... The picture above shows one of the bar in Melbourne.

Hugh and tall buildings mushroom across the city. Under the vibrant summer sun, they look really clean and white.

That's a building at the Federation Square.

And this is the tallest building in Melbourne City. It's the Eureka Tower!

This is the entrance to the Flinder Street station. It looks antique but yet its modern in the inside.

Well, that comes to an end as I did not take enough pictures.

And to guys, very sorry because there's no pretty girls around for me to take their pictures. :)

Leaving Malaysia, Arriving at Australia

Well today I was supposed to leave Malaysia. Went to KLIA early in the morning, flight's on 9.55am. After checking in the luggage, I walked around with my brother around the airport.

Enjoying my last few minutes at Malaysia with mixed feelings. There were regrets but I will settle them when I come back next year.

Taking off! Malaysia is still below me. LoL.

After flying for nearly 4 hours, the plane was now on top of Australia land. There were just the deserts and no civilization.

There's the sunset too.

And the plane landed safely at the airport. Hello Australia!

And we had to drag our luggage onto the transport back to Monash. It was a tough night because we were all hungry and the weather's cold. But at least, we managed to pass the night and it was a great experience!

Chocolate Fair 2010

Went to Mid Valley today. Since everyone was too free, I called Joseph and Tze Wey and we went there in the morning. After passing through many suspicious and complicated roads, we managed to find our way into the Zone A parking of Mid Valley Megamall. Why Zone A? Don't ask me but according to Joseph, he explained that since most student would prefer an 'A' grade in exams, so why not park at Zone A? I was speechless at that time but I managed to maneuver the car at a relatively safe manner into the parking lot. After finding a perfect landing spot, we managed to exit the maze of cars into The Gardens Mall, then into Mid Valley Megamall. We were like zombies lurking around the complex, not knowing what to do or where to go. Then suddenly, we thought that chocolate would be tasty! And so by using all efforts, we finally found the entrance to the Mid Valley Convention Center.

There was an opening ceremony. And some officers from some Lembaga Coco Malaysia giving his speech. Since no one can want to understand what he's talking, we went to McDonald's to grab some cones. Then only we proceed to visit the fair. We expected it to be like PC fair but it was small. We can't do anything about that anyway because it's the first kind of fair in Malaysia. There were quite some chocolate companies which their names never heard of before.

Undecided what chocolate we should buy, we went back to McDonald's since it's lunch hour! On the way, we saw the cinema was having this long queue. So we decided to line ourselves up since there was this queue there. And people started to queue behind us too. After some time we decided to run off, leaving the people behind wondering what the heck these jokers doing. LoL. After grabbing some burgers, we sat and ate peacefully. I ate the same thing with peppers again, but to my disappointment, the peppers were tasteless. And it was horror to find out that our cokes were too 'power' due to too much gas in it and so it has some weird sour taste.

Went back to the chocolate fair after lunch. After sampling somemore black coloured stuffs, we decided to get the Swiss chocolate. They were having some promotion where the price for 1 bar was RM9.90 while 3 bars was RM25 and finally 5 bars was RM42 . While they were still deciding which flavour to get, I decided to do some maths to prevent my brain from rusting. And I found out that the 5 bars promotion is 35 cents more expensive than the 3 bars. That was a surprising result! And Tze Wey went and told the promoter about the 'more expensive' promotion which was supposed to be cheaper. And they removed the price tag quickly before I could take a picture evidence. And so finally we bought 6 bars of chocolate and we saved 42 cents!

And happily ever after, we went home. XD

Today is my birthday.

19 years old starting today, I am advancing towards the adult world. Will I miss the teen years, I don't know myself. But some things we can't make choices. Too bad?

Another weird day

Today got some egg racing.
After makan we wanted to test run again.
But stucked in some stupid lift for 15 mins.
Press the alarm, no one answer.
After calling emergency hotline, they finally located us.
Said hi to Dr.Lan.
And suspicious people thinking 'what the hell those fellows are in the lift'
Some asked if we need water, oxygen or food.
Pure jokers.
After some Force downwards and upwards,
the technician rescued us.
And we still don't know what caused the doors to jam.

The Lotus Eater

Still remember what is the story? Let me tell you. It's about a guy who likes to eat lotus! Just joking. Well, let me just tell you my story.

This morning, I woke up quite early because no one disturbed me last night (actually got). So I can't think properly yet I went downstairs and then went upstairs again. Then I went downstairs and read the newspaper about today's politics again. So boring, I decided to feed my little fishes. Suddenly, something caught my eyes. Obviously it's not a pretty girl. It's my lotus plant. There's a pink/purple flower towering up beneath the water. It's pure, just as the saying in chinese "出淤泥而不染". Surprisingly today it's also the Women's Day. All my salute to mothers who brought us up, and to all ladies who sacrifice for her guy. Not that I have a girlfriend but to Mr.Lim please don't be suspicious. Haha.

Something is definiately out in the society today. Politics playing in Perak, is worsen with each second where new accusation against each other are made to either destroy the opposite or like making a hole in the boat and watch them sink. Eli Wong and her recent case where her privacy was intruded and she 'willingly' resigned while the person responsible was now in neighbouring country, enjoying the fruits of success and his associates were always there to cover his footprints.

Not that I want to say this, but as a future engineer, I must always foresee the future and the results of the present happenings. I wish I can solve the problem, but the question is, are they willing to be more open minded? New materials are found everyday that can build stronger homes, but those people prefer sand and mud instead of fibreglass and reinforced concrete. In the end, your home will collapse.

One morning sometime ago, I saw The Star having scholarship to students. Next morning, there was the Nanyang scholarship, and somemore the Singapore Universities were willing to take us in. Why? Because our government don't want to help? Of course not! How can you be rude by saying the government do not give anything to the rakyat when they were giving this study opportunity to Malay students who got fewer As compared to student of other races? The government claimed that they should protect the Bumis' rights. In the end, who benefit from this system? Of course it will be the weaker Bumi students who went on vacation to pretigious countries and wasted taxpayers' money and some could not even gain knowledge and only know the rules of partying. Such a sad case. What can we do? Thanks to private universities, because they are still willing to build their campus here and take us in with much cheaper fees.

Okla, why should I write my way to ISA secret camp? They don't even provide bak kut teh there also. It's just pointless to go there and waste time. Nevermind that. I guess I should just sleep because too much engineering mathematics is now confusing up my logical thinking. Anyway, sleep is just an illusion.

Pineapple is useful.

Last night, I felt bored. And somehow there was an pineapple in my kitchen. So how? If I leave it there it will rot and turn bad. Since I have some recipe books, I decided then to make some pineapple cookies.

First of all, I made the pineapple filling. Home-made pineapple filling is definiately better than those you get in store. This is because it is fresher, cheaper and you can also gain some experience in making this!

You will need:
1. 450g pineapple, cut into small cubes.
2. 200g castor (fine) sugar.

And for the pineapple you can choose any kind of them. There are 3 types of pineapple in our market which are the Morris, Josaphine and the Sarawak pineapple. All are unique, taste differently from each other, and the price for the Sarawak pineapple is of course the most painful to your wallet. Haha. I recommend you to buy pineapples from Jusco which is cheaper because they sell by pieces and not by kilos. For me I prefer the Sarawak pineapple because it is sweeter and less sour to the tongue.

After preparing those ingrediants above, blend the pineapple cubes until fine and watery, then add the sugar and mix it evenly. Next, pour the blended pineapple on a non-stick pan and cook using medium fire until it turns dry and golden yellow.

This is how it looks like after cooking.

Next, you will need

250g cold butter

50g icing sugar, 1 egg york

360g plain flour, mixed with 2 tbsp custard powder and sifted

Mix butter, icing sugar and egg york till creamy. Fold in flour.

Leave aside for 30 min. Then, put pastry into mould and pipe 5cm length. Place filling at one end and roll up.

This is how the mould looks like.

Next, you will need 1 egg beaten for glazing.

Place cookies on a oil greased pan and bake at 180'c for (+-) 15 minutes till golden brown. Leave to cool before storing.

Catholic High School Gerko Day

Since I was quite free today, and Say Keong was still sleeping, so I couldn't find someone to DoTA with. Haha. After fetching my brother to college, I drove straight to my ex-secondary school. It was so jammed up at the LDP but I managed to reach before 9.30am. While I was walking into the school compound, the joker Ikea fellow called me, asking whether I would like to take thier job position. But after I told her I couldn't work until end of March, she denied my application. Walking down the slope in CHS, I met with Jeen. Later in the hall, there was Chia Yang waiting long long time ago at the Inventors' Club stall.

It was so busy and noisy in the hall and the air-con did not help much to cool the place down. There were a few power failures because the students were consuming too much electricity on the laptops, projectors and other electrical appliances. Pn Kok was frustrated with the situation and so she went on stage and demanded the students to switch off their decorative lights and excess laptops. But before she can finish her sentence ' Please switch off', there was again another power failure. The excited students started to make weird weird screams and sounds. And me and Chia Yang just stood and laughed away.

Walking around I also met with Chun Yan. He was different compared to when he was in Form 5. And also Victor was fooling around with his Energy Saving Bulb and the Van de Graaf generator. Maybe he was bored and sleepy, I don't understand why he need to shock himself a few times with the Energy Saving Bulb which was charged up. LoL.

And since Joseph is not coming, I took a few photos of the Inventors' Club for him to stay updated.

At 31 December 2008 which was new year's eve, I have a party at home. Due to the shortage of fireworks, I managed to get a can of butane specially made for cooking only.

The label on that can said:

Do not store at >40 degree Celcius
Do not punture
Do not throw in fire even when it's empty

but...it did not say that I can't barbeque it...

so I put it into a pot of red hot charcoal to cook. In the end, it of course EXPLODED!

Last Saturday, me and my family went back to Penang for vacation. Upon reaching aunt's house, we were greeted warmly by her family. Although we do not intend to stay long at her house, we went in and my parents chatted with them for so long. In the meantime, I went to their garden to look around.

And I found these...

After some rest, we proceed to our hotel. On the way to Sandy Bay Paradise Hotel, my father suggested that we should take a look at the new dam at Teluk Bahang. It was an enormous dam with of course, lots of water.

Really beautiful...

After that, we went back to the hotel. It was already late evening and so we had dinner at a food court where the food was so delicious! Just don't mind the lard plus trans-fat plus cholesterol and so on..haha

The next day, I woke up early. It was a perfect Sunday. The cool breeze was soft. I went to the beach.

The sun rays were also nice.

After checking out, we went to eat some nice Penang cendol. The cendol was sweet and tasty and we enjoyed them very much. After lunch, we drove to another hotel, the City Bayview hotel. Since it was a hot afternoon, me and my brother had fun in the pool and the water was freezing cold!

Later in the night, it was my father's dinner. The dinner was held by the Chung Ling school OB of year 66/68. That dinner was fantastic, although I saw some adults became childish just like when we were doing our secondary studies. LoL. During the dinner, I went online using the hotel wifi service which was expensive at RM10 per hour. Because of that, I did not chatted for long that night.

On Monday, we checked out early because we were going to Langkawi. We headed to Kuala Perlis jetty because it was nearer to Langkawi island. During the journey, it was less cars but more trees.

Upon reaching the jetty, we took a boat to Langkawi. It was a 45 minutes journey and the boat was full of people.

When we reached Langkawi, we took a taxi to Awana Porto Malai, its some kind of a resort hotel. The taxi was expensive for 5 person and it cost us RM42 ! But for 4 person it's just RM28 ! Can you see the difference?

At the hotel, I managed to find some nice decoration.

At night, we went to eat at the restaurant in the hotel. The night decorations were also very impressive.

There was no cloud on that night. The sky was lighted with lots of stars. But my camera could not take photos in the dark so I didn't take any photos of the sky that night.

The next day, my parents rent a car so we can go around the island. We went to a beach.

The water there was crystal clear, unlike the water at Penang which was murky and dirty.

We also went to the Seven Wells waterfall.

The water was clear and you can even see your own reflection!

After that, we continue to the Langkawi cable car station. There were a few gardens near the station and I visited them as well.

Since the Langkawi Cable was closed due to strong winds, we continue the journey to the Black Sand Beach.

After visiting this beach, we went to another beach. The beach was so clean, there's no rubbish around. Besides, there were lots of crabby and hermit crabs under the sea preparing to be caught. They also like to use their claws to pinch your toes. Ouch!!

Leaving this beach, we went to the hot spring.

There's a pond over there, full of lotus! They were going to bloom, as you can see all the flowers ready to launch their pollens and spread their generation!

The hot spring was really hot. Later we moved on to the Makam Mahsuri. That's where the Langkawi legend comes from. I hope you people know that. We reached there at 6.30pm, and the place closed at 6.30pm, so we did not visit it at all. But I managed to snap a photo before we left the place.

Later at dusk, we reached the Eagle Statue of Langkawi located near the Kuah Jetty. The statue was big big and really big! According to the locals, Langkawi was named from the word 'Helang' and the 'Lang' stands for eagle because the island is full of eagles.

We went shopping after dinner. The duty free stuffs were super cheap! Imported chocolate and wine cost about 25-50% cheaper than those in our local place.

Next day, at the hotel I found some chickens! I ambushed them and they started running away and knock into a transparent glass panel! LoL!!

and so we went home after the 3 days trip in Langkawi. It was fun, and the place was a very nice place to go. Hopefully next time if got chance I will go again. And you all also should go there. It's too good to be described by words.

I am now at Sheraton Subang attending the MUFY graduation night dinner. There are lots of food. And many people wear nice clothes. Say Keong is now beside me and Tze Wey. Should I be happy or sad? I am just proud to be a MUFY student. Thanks to our lecturers very much. Can't imagine it when they do some dance on stage and it is so nice! Now no more show, so we enjoy our dessert. The dinner's gonna finish. Say Keong even questioned me why I go blogging so fast. LoL. Now he's trying to kacau me. Haha.

I found it, on the floor of my living room. It's green in colour. And it looked like an insect. I took a container and caught it when it was trying to fly away.

Quite cute also. But I don't know what to feed it with.

So scary..It's looking at me..

and it plans to dump some 'bombs'...

Feeling treatened, it climbed to the ceiling of the container.

I tried to tap the container, but it stood still. What a calm thing...

I really don't know insects do lick their legs as well. Finally caught it in action!!!

Today, i went back to Penang to attend my cousin's wedding. Around 5.30am, we departed from home. I was so anxious, so i drove at max speed 160kph on highway. Not long, we reached his house at around 10am. At his house, we were greeted by my nephew.

He's so cute. I played with him for some time and soon, I saw the bridegroom and his bride arriving in a BMW. They got down, and immediately, I went straight to take photos of them together. Below is one of the photo...

After some ceremory, we went to the hotel to check in. We stayed in Sandy Bay View Paradise Hotel located at Tanjung Bungah. It was windy over there, until I felt so good and I tied a long toilet paper at the balcony to see the wind speed. It was so nice.

Since its only 3pm, I went to take a nap since dinner starts at 7.30pm.

At around 7.00pm, I got ready and we took the evalator down to the ballroom.

My other cousin and her family. And now their kids call me 'uncle'. LOL. The lady on the right is my aunt, or also her mum. The couple at the far left were my parents.

There was an ice swam, and its beautifully made.

The decoration in the ballroom was absolutely done by a professional. Somemore still got helium balloons flying all over the ceiling. And so many kids begging their parents to get the balloons for them. Fortunately, I was high enough to take these balloons.

Finally, the bridegroom and his bride arrived. So many ribbons and coloured papers were shot into the air. Some landed in the drinks. So sad for most people.

They were invited onto the stage to cut a big big cake. Really big. I hope I can have one also next time...

And then there was this funny incident. When the bridegroom opened the bottle the cork hit the camera man. I laughed silently. Hahahahahahahahaha!

Then they cheered the audience.

And the guests cheered them back.

Soon after that, the dinner was over. I wished them faster have kids so I can become the kids' uncle. And of course the young couple felt shy until their faces became red. Haha.

Abstract

Genetically modified organism (GMO) is a breakthrough in biotechnology. What are the disadvantages of GMO? GMO can pose a hazard to humans and other living organisms such as disrupt food chain and ecosystem, trigger allergic reaction and can be poisonous. Besides that, usage of GMO has many unresolved ethical issues. The production of ‘designer baby’ causes disposal of unsuccessful embryos and ‘playing god’ destroys integrity, beauty, and the balance of nature. Selective breeding also increases the vulnerability of extinction of species. On the other hand, GMO can cause many long-term effects. One of them is genetic pollution which is irreversible causes the formation of ‘Superweed’. Genetically modified (GM) foods also have less nutrients and some of them are proven to be cancer causing. Therefore, let’s say ‘no’ to GMOs since they have many negative implications on us.

1.0 Introduction

What is a genetically modified organism?

A genetically modified organism can be an animal or plant which its genetic information or DNA has been altered by means using biotechnology and genetic engineering. This can be done in a well-controlled laboratory using modern technology available to achieve in making a so-called desirable, perfect and non-defective organism for human use. These organisms whose genes are modified are called transgenic animals or plants. “Many genetically modified (GM) animals and plants utilize genes from other organisms, transgenes, to increase yield or change other economically important traits.” (Hedrick, 2001). Inducing genes from outside into an organism causes it to exhibit different traits and properties compared with its original form. The added gene is called a transgene. (Encyclopædia Britannica, 2008) Thus, by manipulating the chromosomes or DNA, crops can bear fruits faster and more resistant to pest infestation while farm animals can grow bigger in a short time and produce more meat and milk.

There are many ways one can produce a transgenic organism. Generally, this process is regarded as Genetic Transfer. A bacterium is used in this process because it can infiltrate healthy cells. This natural ability of some bacteria to transfer genetic information between themselves was first recognized by Joshua Lederberg and Edward Tatum in 1946. (Brooker, 2005, p.138). Scientists had identified its property long time ago and now it is used to carry transgenes into healthy cells and bind them together with the genes of the cells. First, a bacterium is implanted with transgenes needed and it is cultured in nutrient solution for days for it to multiply into a colony of bacteria. After the amount of bacteria is sufficient, they are introduced into another colony of healthy cells. When the bacteria meet with the cells, they digest the cell membrane and inject the cell with their genes, which include the transgenes. The transgenes will then combine with the genes of the healthy cells and form a new pattern of genetic information.

The cells with new and unique genes can now act differently from their predecessor. For example, bacteria whose genes are modified can be used to produce the human protein insulin, which is essential for the treatment of diabetes. Besides that, hormones can also be produced by these bacteria to treat growth disorder such as cretinism. Moreover, it is also safer to use bacteria to produce human proteins since older products are purified from cadavers and could transmit diseases such as AIDS and hepatitis C. (Wikipedia, 2008).

However, since the breakthrough in biotechnology that created GMOs, many side effects had appeared and these effects can only be found early of the 20^th century and many other negative impacts are yet to be discovered. Although GMOs can be useful and beneficial to us, some claimed that GMOs could pose a hazard to humans and other organisms, especially when the transgenes are transferred to other organisms through pollination of flowers, and also through the sexual reproduction of animals. Besides that, the ethical issues whether GMOs should be used to create organisms are now hotly debated. The production of GMOs may result in unintentional death and killing, for example are the designer babies, where embryos are taken for the choosing process and the rest of unwanted embryos are disposed. Lastly, the research on GMO itself will cause many long-term effects to happen over time. ‘Superweed’ is one example where the herbicide resistant transgene is implanted unintentionally into the genes of wild species and causes the wild weeds to have resistant to commercial herbicide.

2.0 Body of report

2.1 Genetically modified organisms can pose hazard

Genetically modified organisms (GMO) can pose a hazard to humans and other living organisms. This is because GMOs have transgenes which are new and unique when compared to the natural genes. Since transgenes are created by unnatural means, living organisms might not be capable in adapting the transgenes. This happens when the transgenes from the GMOs are transferred to other organisms via natural ways.

Transgenes can be transferred through pollination of flowers in plants. The newly introduced traits can cross out into nearby plants of the same type and species and in some cases, to closely related wild relatives. (Wikipedia, 2008). This can result in new plant being formed. The newly formed plant has different traits and these traits can be quite harmful, for example, a plant whose genes contain a pest resistant transgene can prevent pests from eating its leaf, but when this transgene is transferred to a huge population of plants, the pests will become extinct because they could not eat those plants and die of hunger. Indirectly, the extinction of this pest will also affect the food chain of an ecosystem. Since animals can’t produce food or energy themselves, they have to rely on the food chain to get food. However, if one organism in a food chain become extinct, in this case is the pest, the next level organism that eat the pest for food will also die when food is insufficient. This goes on for the next few levels of organisms and many organisms will become extinct. Thus, by breaking one link on the chain, all of the organisms above that link will be in danger of extinction (like the domino effect). (ThinkQuest, 2008).

Besides that, genetically modified foods can also trigger an allergic reaction of the body. This happens when a transgene, which is already an allergen to humans, is implanted into a crop to increase the commercial values of the crop. This allergic causing transgene can be taken from peanuts, tree nuts (walnut, almond, cashew etc.), soy or wheat. For example, if a person who is allergic to peanuts eats a fruit that is genetically engineered to contain a peanut transgene so that it can taste better, he can suffer an allergic attack and can be life threatening. According to Cummins (1999), in 1996 a major GE food disaster was narrowly averted when Nebraska researchers learned that a Brazil nut gene spliced into soybeans could result in potentially fatal allergies in people sensitive to Brazil nuts.

However, genetically modified organisms have desirable properties. When they are made into foods and products, they can be tastier or have a better texture and a better commercial value that can benefit the economy of a country.

Although genetically modified organisms bring good to the economy, genetically engineered (GE) products can also be poisonous and harmful to humans. In 1989, a GE common dietary supplement containing L-tryptophan killed 37 Americans and permanently disabled 5,000 more people with a potentially deadly blood disorder, eosinophilia myalgia syndrome (EMS). It is believed that the bacteria accountable in making this drug became tainted during the recombinant DNA process. Besides that, GE potatoes using DNA from snowdrop plant are found to have different chemical component from the ordinary potatoes and can damage the important organs and immune systems of lab mice which are fed with these GE potatoes. (Cummins, 1999).

In conclusion, genetically modified organisms are not safe. They contain transgenes which are unnatural and can harm other organisms. Besides, GMOs also have allergenic effects on people. Therefore, in order for people to be more careful when they are making their choices whether or not when purchasing these products made from GMOs, the government should enforce mandatory placement of markers and labels on these products so that people could be aware of their purchases and take precautions for their own health and safety.

2.2 Genetically modified organisms have many unresolved ethical issues

Genetically modified organisms (GMO) have many unresolved ethical issues. One particularly debated issue is the ‘designer baby’. What is a ‘designer baby’? It is a baby whose genes are changed or modified according to the parents' liking.

The parents can choose their baby to be handsome or beautiful in the future so that their child could be looked up upon by the society. Besides, parents can also choose to have a baby who is smart by altering the genes to utilize the development of his brain. Some would also like their child to be free of a particular genetic disease such as Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, cancer and much more. Some parents might also choose a particular sex for the baby by altering the XX and XY gene because in some countries such as China, the Chinese families prefer to have a baby boy rather than a girl because they believe that a boy will bring happiness and good-will to the family and when the boy is grown up into a man later, he will also be able to inherit the family business.

However, during the process of selection of a desirable baby, reproductive cells such as sperms and ovum are taken from the parents or from donors. These cells are put under a microscope and genetic selection takes place. Genes from these cells are added, removed and modified and they are later fertilized to produce embryos. According to Agar (2006) there are much big concerns on the health of clones. Animal clones suffer from lots of problems that some scientists refer to the incomplete reprogramming of DNA or damage due to the process of nuclear transfer and therefore, human clones are as well vulnerable to suffer from these problems.

Thus, these embryos are taken and they are screened using the DNA test once they are modified. If a defect is found within it, this defective embryo will be eliminated. This creates an issue, because an embryo is no longer just a living tissue. It is a developing human being who has life and the act of disposing it is equal to killing it. ‘Embryo: An organism in the earliest stage of development; in a man, from the time of conception to the end of the second month in the uterus.’ (Dox, Ida G. et al., 1993, p.146).

On the other hand, genetically modified organism (GMO) is wrong to be created. Humans can’t play god. According to Perry (n.d.), “Genetic engineering is often judged as ‘unnatural’ or said to ‘violate natural law.” Since GMOs are created using biotechnology, this technique of creating life violates natural law because it does not undergo the process of reproduction, either sexually or asexually. It is also not natural because the creation of GMO involves the modification of genes and DNA using human technique and it differs from the natural process in creating life, where the modification of genes and DNA take place in the body of an organism in the natural way.

Besides, creating GMOs can also disrupt integrity, beauty, and the balance of nature. (Comstock, n.d.). The way of creating life using genetic technique destroys the integrity and beauty of organisms. For example, plants flower when they want to bear fruit with seeds for the future generation and animals make love in order to survive their species over generations, and when biotechnology is involve in the process of creating life, these integrity and beauty of organisms will not be seen. Moreover, the balance of nature will also be disrupted. This normally happens when a particular gender has more in number compared to the opposite gender. On the other hand, selective breeding can also cause animals and plants to have similar characteristics within their species. When this happens, many problems will start to arise. One of the problem is these organisms will be more vulnerable to diseases because they have the same genes and DNA. There is no variation between them and so any harmful disease can wipe out the entire population easily.

In conclusion, there are many ethical issues that can still be debated on the use of genetically modified organisms. As what many people had thought, GMO is a solution to many problems such as sickness and diseases. However, it can still be argued that the research and process of producing GMOs had caused the sacrifice of many living organisms. There are no ways to reduce the negative effects of GMOs, and the best way of reducing it is to totally do away with the usage of GMOs.

2.3 The use of Genetically Modified Organisms has many long-term effects.

The use of genetically modified organism (GMO) can cause many long-term effects. These effects only happen over time and cannot be foreseen by scientists. Thus, many GMOs are approved without considering the concern that there are many risks that can be caused by them.

Genetic pollution is one of the long-term effects caused by genetically modified organism. What is genetic pollution? Genetic pollution is the undesirable gene flow into wild populations. (Wikipedia, 2008). As mentioned above, the transgene from a GMO can cross out to the same species and wild relatives and cause the other organism to obtain the transgene. Thus, a new genetically engineered (GE) organism interact with other life forms and reproduce, transfer their characteristics and genes and mutate in response to environmental influences. (Greenpeace, 2008). One example of genetic pollution caused by GMO is the ‘Superweed’. ‘Superweed’ was formed when herbicide resistant transgene from oilseed rape plant in a GM crop experiment has transferred into local wild plant, which is the wild mustard. (Brown, 2005). This creates ‘Superweed’ which is immune to the herbicide, causing farmers to have great difficulties in killing them because they are no longer afraid of the herbicide due to the transgene that chemically alters and detoxifies the herbicide. (Understanding Evolution, 2005).

Thus, in order to get rid of the ‘Superweed’, a greater and stronger herbicide must be used and this requires more resources plus efforts and the stronger herbicide can also be dangerous to human health. Since genetic pollution is often irreversible and can change an organism forever, the ‘Superweed’ is a problem to humans that can last for decades.

Supporters of genetically modified organisms claimed that the genetically modified (GM) crops have better nutritional values because they contain transgenes that are adapted from other organisms.

However, studies show that their claims are groundless. According to Batalion (2006), in a study of GM Vica Faba, a type of bean in the same family as soy, it was found out that there was an increase in estrogen levels. Besides that, he says that milk from cows with rBGH, a type of GM growth hormone, contains significantly higher levels of pus, bacteria, and fat. The problem arises when people consume GM food over a long period of time. Since GM foods contain high levels of hormones and they are manufactured into various kinds of processed foods, many people, especially the young will be affected. The increase in hormone can cause children to become mature and reach puberty faster. Besides, adolescents nowadays are more likely to be bigger in size, taller and muscular due to the effect of these hormones. This also contribute to the increase in number of people getting cancer nowadays compared to the older days when GM foods are not present and sickness is one of their causes of death in the past. According to Cohen (n.d.), there was a surge in lymphatic cancer when the hormone rBGH was approved for use in 1994, and before 1995, lymphatic cancers were relatively rare.

In conclusion, there are many long-term effects due to the use of genetically modified organisms. If we still continue to use GMOs, it might not do any good to the future generation. The GM foods are proved to be cancer causing, and this make us more susceptible to health problems. Therefore, we should stop the usage of genetically modified products in order to live healthier.

3.0 Conclusion

Genetically modified organism (GMO) is not the solution, but it is a problem to us nowadays. Genetically modified products can now be found everywhere, from animal farms to orchards and also in the food served on our table. There’s no way to deny the appearance of GM products anymore because it is so commonly used in our daily life. Some people might accept it and take it as granted.

Firstly, genetically modified organism is posing danger to us. Basically, the transgenes from GMO cross out to wild species and this affects the food chain and the whole ecosystem. Besides, there are chances of getting an allergic reaction because transgenes are taken from other organisms and there are hidden dangers in them. There are also many cases around the world where genetic engineered products are made using GMO became contaminated and many people had been permanently disabled.

Secondly, till today there are still many ethical issues unresolved regarding the use of genetically modified organism. Supporters of GMO claim that it is a way to reduce sickness of the future generation by using the ‘designer baby’ technique. However, making ‘designer baby’ can cause the killing of embryos which are defective and do not meet the required level. Besides, humans can’t play god and when we produce GMO, the natural beauty of organisms will not be seen. Selective breeding can also cause extinction when one disease can wipe out the whole population easily.

Lastly, many long-term effects appear due to the usage of genetically modified organism. Genetic pollution is one of the negative effects and this had caused the formation of ‘Superweed’ in many countries. Moreover, studies show that genetically modified foods contain fewer nutrients but more hormones and this increases the risk of contracting cancer.

In conclusion, people should be more conscious and aware of the dangers of using and producing GMOs. In order for some who don’t realize the negative effects of GM products to be more cautious, the government should impose the law that requires labeling on these products so that consumers are able to make their choices. Besides, the killing of embryos should be banned as well because this infiltrates with the human rights. Furthermore, scientists should work together to find a better solution rather than using GMOs. They should also find ways to counter the negative effects caused by the usage of GMOs in the long run.

Food chain A succession of organisms in an ecological community that constitutes a continuation of food energy from one organism to another as each consumes a lower member and in turn is preyed upon by a higher member.

Hepatitis C Hepatitis C is caused by the hepatitis C virus. It is generally spread through blood transfusions.

Insulin A hormone secreted by pancreatic beta cells that lowers blood glucose level.

L-tryptophan Tryptophan (abbreviated as Trp or W) is one of the 20 standard amino acids, as well as an essential amino acid in the human diet.

Nuclear transfer The generation of a new animal nearly identical to another one by injection of the nucleus from a cell of the donor animal into an enucleated oocyte of the recipient.

Ovum An ovum (plural ova) is a haploid female reproductive cell or gamete.

Parkinson’s disease Parkinson's disease (PD) is a progressive disorder of the nervous system.

rBGH Recombinant bovine growth hormone: a synthetic growth hormone, used to stimulate milk production in dairy cows.

Sperm The male gamete or sex cell that contains the genetic information to be transmitted by the male, exhibits autokinesia, and is able to effect zygosis with an oocyte.

Transgene Gene or genetic material that has been transferred by any number of genetic engineering techniques from one organism to another.

Transgenic organism Plant, animal, bacterium, or other living organism that has had a foreign gene added to it by means of genetic engineering.

Some Trip...

During the August break, MUFY organized some trip and this time it is to Westport Malaysia located somewhere near the sea. According to many people, this trip is going to be boring but since I got nothing to do, I decide to just follow and look around.

It rained in the morning so we slept in the bus all the way until we reached Westport. Upon reaching, the rain stopped. However, the sky was still full with clouds and I could not even see a ray of light. Luckily, the company sent us a guide to take us into the building or else we could just got lost in the middle of some container and end up in some kind of country.

We were taken to the 14th floor of their office. Upon reaching, finally, we saw the port through the glass panel. It was huge.

We were brought into a hall where a briefing session took place. It was so boring and the speaker also threaten us not to sleep as almost everyone in the hall had their eye lids down. I was also dropping down but due to one of my classmate kept on disturbing me, I can't sleep properly. Later on, they took us to the cafeteria to have some breakfast. Then, we boarded our bus and went on with a trip around the port.

Do you know that each of these cranes cost millions?? They are so rich!!!

So many cars..we hope they give us 2 cars each...haha

Don't ask me what's that but it definitely looks like a nuke.

Try playing hide and seek here and you will be lost forever. LOL

Finally after taking us around the port, we were taken to a garden. I can't believe my eyes to see they have plenty of $$ to decorate their building. There was still a small (quite big) fountain somewhere near the entrance.

Some bamboo plant made me feel like I was in China.

Secondary School Band Competition!

Last Wednesday, I followed my ex-school, Catholic High School to Stadium Merdeka. What for I am so supportive? First, I have an advanced maths test on the next day so I want to relax myself. Next, of course, is to meet ex-students also!!!

It looks like a great disaster, because I mixed and crushed the chocolate (which must not be made too fine). Maybe someday later I can make it for all of you too! haha

Today, is the first lesson day of MUFY semester 2. New faces of course! I see lots of new people from all around...however they recognise me. Why? Because they either had haircuts, wearing new clothes or putting makeups... Besides, i also see new teachers and for those who taught me in semester 1, most of them are not teaching in me now. I regretted for being so silly in the past because I used to play around in class, usually with friends..haha. Although teachers in college are not fierce, they do care for the students. Let me describe some of the sem 1 teachers below...

•Ms. Dewika, she's my physics teacher. Quite fierce, quite good. Big in size, she's too enormous to fight with. Used to pour (note the word pour not spray) water on student who slept during lessons. Gives good lectures, and at last, produce quality students.
•Ms. Sara, my beloved chemistry teacher. Very special, very young, she makes a perfect character for being a good teacher. Kind and loving, she gives us tips when we cannot answer question during quizzes, exempt us from any presentation. She don't mind if we play with chemicals, but the lab assistant do.
•Ms. Lee, is my advanced maths teacher. Let me see how to describe her...well she's a bit like Pn. Chia (my former secondary school teacher), just that Ms. Lee is not wearing glasses. She likes giving homework although only smart girls do them. She's very funny but don't make her angry...
•Ms. Pang, loves to teach maths. Very caring also, she always guide me during difficulties. A caring teacher like her is really hard to find these days. She is quite a charming teacher (not to say that that's my idea but it is our opinion), but also hardworking until she caught a chicken pox once and absent for 2 weeks.
•Ms. Chong, old and energetic, she still walks around college like a teenager. She used to tell us a lot of stories, and from there i got to know of some inspirations. She's very supportive of the chinese culture but she can speaks a fluent english!

Let's give them a fair chance for a description also...
•Mr. Chan, finally a male teacher. He's a bit nervous and the class is boring. However, we can play around and a guy in my group managed to spoil a transformer during our first day of lab class..lol. Luckily we say we don't know anything about it and we got away without harm.
•Ms. Putri, my new english teacher. She is good looking and kind. From the first look, i knew that she is going to be with us for this semester, so I am really hoping for the best from her.
•Ms. Lee...still same as above..LOL
•Ms. Inti, is my new chemistry teacher. My friends and me always address her as 'evil' because she relief my class once last time and she is so evil!!! But now, I changed my mind after attending her class. I found that she is quite knowledgeble, although she had been pregnant for 6 months!
•Mr. Deimudu, he is the maths teacher. He's an indian, so he can't speak chinese, hopefully he don't because me and my friends used to simply talk in class. He likes to be alone, and one day I saw him sitting right behind Pn. Norli, the MUFY director..and and he seemed to admire her! No good...
